HEALING RELATED FAQ What is - Absent healing - See Distant healing. Acupuncture - A complete system of treatment for physical and
psychological problems developed in China thousands of years ago. Acupuncture
points are stimulated along bioenergy lines (meridians) that run from
toes and fingers to head. Each meridian corresponds to a bioenergy organ,
roughly correlated with physical organs. Points may be stimulated with needles,
moxa (herbs that are burned while the stalks are touching the points), laser
light, electricity or the touch of a finger. Alternative (Altered) State of Consciousness (ASC) – State in which consciousness differs from our everyday experience of awareness, as in dreams or mystical states, often characterized by unusual changes in time perception, distortions of everyday reality experiences, perceptions of transcendent realities, etc. Alternative appears to be a term that is more accepting of the normality of these states than Altered. Aspirate - Remove fluid, as from a cyst; Alt: Breathe foreign matter into the lungs. Aura - The bioenergy field around the body may be seen by sensitive
people as constantly shifting colors that reflect the states of body, emotions,
mind, relationships and spirit. Barbara Brennan healing - 4 year course of healing with
strong emphasis on psychological and bioenergy approaches. Blinds - Conditions established in a randomized controlled research study where the subjects and/or the experimenters (including therapists and evaluators) do not know who is receiving the treatment and who is not. Bioenergy - Healers and healees often report sensations
of heat, tingling, vibration, or electrical sensations during healing
treatments. This suggests an exchange of some sort of energy occurring during
healing treatments. So far, no consistent findings of energies have been
identified across different healing modalities. Bioenergy Medicine - Therapies that address bioenergies. These include acupuncture, applied kinesiology, craniosacral osteopathy, homeopathy, flower essences, spiritual healing and others. Bodhisattva - In Mahayana Buddhism, " 'one whose essence (sattva) is perfected wisdom (bodhi),' a being who, having brought himself to the brink of Nirvana, voluntarily renounces his prize that he may return to the world to make it accessible to others. He deliberately sentences himself to age-long servitude that others, drawing on his acts of supererogation, may enter Nirvana before him." Huston Smith, The Religions of Man p.121 Candidiasis - Yeast infection with Candida albicans (a normally harmless inhabitant of the gut , mucous membranes and skin) which grows excessively when antibiotics eliminate other normally present bacteria from our bodies. The overgrowth of yeast can cause headaches, weakness, urniary frequency, stomach aches, diarrhea and food intolerances (especially yeast, wheat). Centering – Finding a balanced state of being in which distractions do not intrude to mar the focus on healing. This facilitates maximal effects of intent for healing. Chakra - Bionergy center along the midline of the body,
identified in Chinese medicine and spiritual healing as a "transformer" for
bioenergies entering the body. Healing may be given at chakras that provide
energies to particular parts of the body. Channeling - Transmitting information from spirits. Also called mediumship. Complementary/Alternative Medicine (CAM) - Therapies
that are not generally offered within conventional medical care (such as
acupuncture, homeopathy, spiritual healing, and many more) are grouped under the
term CAM. Craniosacral osteopathy - sensations of energy
pulsations around the head and spine (and by more sensitive practitioners,
anywhere around the body) guide practitioners for assessment and treatment Craniotomy - Operation on the contents of the skull Cult - Group in which the leader cannot be questioned, which uses coercion to discourage members from leaving. Curanderismo - Healing within Latin American traditions. Debulk - remove part of a tumor mass Dissociativve disorder - A "split" in the personality,
usually from severe emotional trauma early in life, leading to multiple
personalities. Distant (absent) healing - Spiritual healing can be sent from any
distance apparently with equal effects. This is done as mental focus/intent,
meditation or prayer. Distant Mental Influence on Living Systems (DMILS).- See Psi healing. Divine healing - Many healers feel that healing is brought about by a Divine intervention. Double blind study - Research in which the therapists, researchers who make assessments and subjects of the study are unaware of certain conditions of the study, such as whether a given subject is receiving a particular treatment or a placebo. Effectiveness - How well a treatment works when used by the average therapist with the average client in the usual treatment setting. Efficacy - How well does a treatment work in a randomized controlled trial (RCT) or other assessment setting compared to a placebo or to another treatment of known efficacy. Efficiency - The level of efforts needed to produce an effect. Emic - Explanation that acknowledges that peoples from cultures other than our own, behaving in manners that are different from ours, usually have their own legitimate cultural explanations for their beliefs and behaviors. (Contrasted with etic) Etic - Explanations based on Western convictions that modern science can provide "objective"explanations for every phenomenon - within the frameworks of Western scientific paradigms. (Contrasted with emic) Faith - Belief without preliminary factual basis in the material world; also a meta-belief in the validity of another belief. Faith healing - This is a term, particularly in the media, commonly used synonymously with any type of spiritual healing. Within religious settings, it may connote a belief that faith in religious tenets is required for healing to occur. While faith may facilitate healing for believers, a lack of response to healing is sometimes interpreted as indicating lack of faith. This could add guilt to distress already present from whatever brought a person for healing. The responses of non-human organisms to healing suggests that faith on the part of the recipient of healing is not always necessary. Flower Essences - Very dilute solutions of bionergetic essence of
flowers, used in a manner similar to homeopathy to stimulate natural defenses.
Originally developed by Edward Bach, there are now many other varieties,
including Alaskan, Australian, Desert Alchemy, Green Hope Farm, Pacific,
Perelandra, and others. Healing Touch (HT) - Developed by Janet Mentgen, RN, Healing Touch
includes assessments of healees' bioenergy fields with the healer's hands,
chakra diagnosis and treatment, the use of pendulums to augment intuitive
awareness, and spiritual awareness. Healing energy is perceived as being
channeled through the healer from a universal source. Taught largely by nurses.
Has training and certification. Hematology - Study of blood and blood disorders. Holistic - Often used to indicate use of CAM therapies
or partial aspects of these therapies. Homeopathy - Treatment with extremely dilute substances
to stimulate the body's natural defenses. Homeostasis - The state of healthy balance maintained by the body's automatic regulating systems. For instance, temperature, blood chemicals, hormones, and blood pressure are all kept within specific ranges so that the body can function at optimal biological levels. Imagery - Mentally picturing a state of being (such as
being healthy) or an action (such as a sports activity) can bring the mind and
body into that state. Imagery exercises are used to relieve pain, deal with
cancers and AIDS, and enhance sports performance. Integrative care - the blending of complementary/
alternative medicine (CAM) with conventional medical practice. On the one hand
this is motivated by patients' demands for services that complement conventional
medical care, and on the other hand by health care providers' awareness of
economic opportunities and to a lesser extent by their awareness of the benefits
of complementary therapies. Intuition - Inner awarenesses that may provide information and
guidance, not based on sensory inputs or logical deductions. Many healers have
strong intuitive gifts. Kundalini - Energies at the base of the spine that may rise up the spine as a part of the process of spiritual enlightenment. Laying-on of hands healing - Healing is often given with the healer's hands near to or lightly touching the body of the healee. This is a generic, descriptive term. LeShan healing - Distant ("Type I") healing. Developed by Lawrence
LeShan, PhD, taught by Joyce Goodrich, PhD. Leukemia - A blood cell cancer. Likert scale - Multiple choice questions along a continuum, such as, "I feel (much worse, as little worse, unchanged, a little better, much better). Medical dowsing - Dowsers are able to locate underground water or
other resources, using their intuitive gifts. Some dowsers are also able to
intuitively identify physical and psychological problems and to give healing.
Some of the other healing modalities (e.g. Healing Touch) also teach the use of
pendulums and other ways of accessing intuitive awareness. Mediumship - See Channeling Mental healing - Used in Index Medicus to identify spiritual healing as defined on this site. Meridian Based Therapies (MBTs) - Therapies derived from acupressure.
You press or tap on various acupressure points, usually while reciting an
affirmation that focuses your mind on your problem. Excellent for anxieties,
fears, phobias, eliminating old hurts, installying positive beliefs, sports
performance enhancement, reducing/eliminating physical pais an dallergies, and
more. Metaphysical thought – Speculations on primary causes and ultimate significance of the world beyond its measurable and testable limits. Metaphysics addresses ‘why’ things are and makes value assessments of thought and actions. In some cases the reasoning is inductive, that is from personal experience which is positive, intuitive, or first person: gnosis. In most cases, the reasoning is deductive, usually based upon assumptions derived from cultural or religious traditions or another person’s gnosis. Namaste - Hindu greeting, "I honor the divine in you that resonates with the divine in me." Neoplasm - Cancer Network Spinal Analysis - Developed by Donald Epstein, DC,
this is an energetic form of healing involving light touch without forcebul
manipulations. Neurolinguistic Programming (NLP) - A treatment method derived from
hypnotherapy, utilizing anchoring of positive and negative feelings by touching
the body while focusing on positive and negative memories and images. This is
called anchoring feelings. The positive anchors cancel the negative ones. Noetic – Awarenesses beyond description in linear words and concepts, derived from spiritual awareness, gnosis. Non-Local Consciousness - The mind can reach across space and time to obtain and share information with other people, with the collective consciousness of groups of people or of all of mankind, and with transpersonal consciousnesses (spirits, spiritual luminaries, and God). This is possible through telepathy (mind-to-mind communication), clairsentience (knowing directly from the physical world), precognition and retrocognition (knowing the past or future). Non-local consciousness and non-local mind are terms coined by Larry Dossey, MD. Paranormal healing - Term used in some European literature for spiritual healing as defined on this website. Placebo - A treatment that has no intrinsic healing
benefits but is perceived by the recipient to be a potent intervention and
therefore influences the recipient to improve. This is a form of suggstion. It
is acknowledged in research as the experimenter effect. A negative
suggestion can also produce a negative, or nocebo, effect. Polarity Therapy - Energy balancing between various
points on the body. Developed by Randolph Stone, an osteopath, naturopath, and
chiropractor. Positron emission tomography - Diagnostic imaging technique that uses radioactive materials absorbed in tissues Probability - See Statistics. Prayer healing - Healing may be offered as formal prayer in a house of
worship or may be sent as personal prayer for the healing of someone in need.
Within some religious settings the laying-on of hands is also practiced, by
clergy and also by lay congregants. Psi (parapsychological) healing - Psi (taken from the Greek letter) is a term from parapsychology, encompassing telepathy, clairsentience, pre- and retro-cognition, and psychokinesis (PK, or "mind over matter"). Parapsychologists have viewed healing as biological PK, or Distant Mental Influence on Living Systems (DMILS). Many healers have psychic gifts. Psychic healing - See Psi healing Psychoneuroimmunology (PNI) - .Relaxation, meditation, and imagery
exercises that can enhance immune system activity. Qigong healing - Chinese healing, including self-healing through
gentle physical movements and meditation, along with external qi healing
given by the Master. Qualitative study - Research exploring in-depth responses of a group of individuals to a given questionnaire that may relate to their condition or treatment. Quantum healing - Spiritual healing may overlap with quantum physics. Radiesthesia and Radionics - In Britain there are practitioners of
radiesthesia and radionics, dowsers who use instruments with dials for dowsing
and distant healing. These have been outlawed in America by the Food and Drug
Administration. Randomized controlled trial (RCT) - Study in which subjects are randomly assigned to treatment and comparison (control) groups, where assessments are made on both groups prior to and following treatment. Reiki - Japanese system of laying-on of hands and
distant healing taught world-wide. Training in Levels I, II, and Master, each in
weekend workshops. The essence of learning Reiki is the empowerment of the
Master and the use of Japanese symbols.. Respant - "Responsible participant," a term suggested by Bernie
Siegel, to replace the word "patient." Scientism - The fundamentalist belief in the absolute rightness of western medical and scientific approaches and wrongness of other worldviews and systems of practice. Self healing - Dealing with your own problems through relaxation,
meditation, imagery, prayer, giving yourself spiritual healing, and the like. Shadow - Those aspects of ourselves that we are uncomfortable acknowledging (perceived weaknesses, traumatizing experiences, socially unacceptable thoughts and desires, etc.) and often bury in our unconscious mind. Shamanic/shamanistic healing - Shamans in traditional
cultures mediate between the worlds of matter/ flesh and those of spirit. They
are gifted individuals who have undergone extensive apprenticeships in herbal,
bioenergy, and spirit healings. They heal through herbs, bioenergy treatments,
chants, drumming, other rituals, and prayer. Shen Tao - A variant of acupressure, that attributes its efficacy to visualizations of energy flows from the acupuncturist to the patient when the acupuncture points are touched with the therapist’s finger. SHEN Therapy - Touch healing method taught internationally. Developed
by Richard Pavek, an American scientist. Soul – That part of a person which survives death and integrates aspects of the person’s most recent personality with their eternal Self. (Some prefer to call this part the spirit. See also spirit for my explanation of my preference for soul here and spirit there.) Spirit – That part of a person which survives death and still retains aspects of the person’s personality. (Some prefer to call this part the soul. I prefer spirit because of the popular use of this term to denote those who have passed on but return to communicate through channeled messages. See also soul.) Spiritual healing - is a systematic, purposeful intervention by one or
more persons aiming to help another living being (person, animal, plant, or
other living system) by means of focused intention, hand contact, or passes
to improve their condition. Spiritual healing is brought about without the use
of conventional energetic, mechanical, or chemical interventions. Some healers
attribute spiritual healing occurrences to God, Christ, other "higher powers,"
spirits, universal or cosmic forces or energies, biological healing energies or
forces residing in the healer, psychokinesis (mind over matter), or self-healing
powers or energies latent in the healee. Psychological interventions are
inevitably part of healing, but spiritual healing adds many dimensions to
interpersonal factors. Statistics - Mathematical analyses that provide a measure of the likelihood that research findings could have occurred by chance. These are often expressed as a probability ("p") with a number indicating the degree of possible random occurrence of the observed results. For instance, a probability of less than one time in a hundred is abbreviated as p < 0.01. The minimum limit generally acccepted as a valid demonstration of significance is 5 times in a hundred, or p < 0.05. Subtle energy - See Bioenergy. SUDS score - Subjective Units of Distress Score. On a scale of 0 - 10, with "10" being the worst you could possibly feel when focused on your problem, and "0" for not feeling bad at all. Used as a sequential assessment for stress reduction treatments. Can also be used to assess building of positive feelings. Therapeutic Touch - Bioenergy healing, developed by
Dolores Krieger, Ph.D., RN, professor of nursing at New York University and Dora
van Gelder Kunz, a gifted clairsentient and healer. Taught and used worldwide,
especially by nurses, with certification courses. Taught also to laypersons. Transcendent healing - Healing attributed to
interventions of God, angels, Christ, saints and other luminary humans, or
spirits. Unconventional healing - Used sometimes to distinguish spiritual healing from conventional, allopathic treatments. Validity - Assessment of whether an assessment actually measures what it purports to measure. Vibrational healing - Bioenergies are difficult to
describe and define in words. One of the sensations reported by healers and
healees during healing is that of vibration. Wholistic healing - addresses body, emotions, mind, relationships
(with others and with Gaia, our planet), and spirit Yang - The sunny side of the slope, and may
